To rewind a bit, we got to celebrate his birthday early with a group of his friends last weekend when everyone was free. About twenty of us (10 kids under 6, including 3 babies) piled in Johnny Bruscos and celebrated with pizza, laughs, loudness, and cake. It was a bit chaotic, but perfect. We sang “Happy Birthday”, he got a Star Wars cake, and afterwards all the guys went to see a movie, and all the girls headed home (everyone else with their kids) to unwind and in my case, go to bed!
I wanted to do something special on his actual birthday because I had this realization that there is a little pressure on your spouses’ birthday for them to have a fun day. And guess who had to attend a four-hour integrity training that day? This girl. So I planned an early start to the day, some activities to keep him busy while I was at work/training, and picked up with a date night that evening.
My idea was not original, this was actually a bit of an adaptation from The Dating Divas’ website (there’s always fun stuff on there). Delyn and I take a lot of photos of each other, but it’s actually kind of rare for us to take photos together. I’m not a big selfie person (unless it’s snapchat face filters… I can’t get enough of those), but I realized that a lot of times this is the best way for us to take photos and capture the little moments. So I created a personalized Photo Scavenger Hunt #SelfieStyle for Delyn, and included all of his favorite things to do throughout the day.
We woke up with chocolate chip pancakes and stayed busy throughout the day, even breaking our regular curfew for a weeknight movie (whoa, watch out folks!). We had a blast, and as the day went on I stopped worrying so much about how the photos looked and started caring more about how much fun we had taking them. The key was getting out of our regular routine, treating ourselves to a little extra fun (without stressing over dollar signs or calories), and focusing more on each other than everything else going on around us. It was a fun day! And for a few short months, we are technically the same age, and he can stop picking on me for being old! Love you, Del.
