Last month the College Station Kiwanis Club launched a Children’s Grief Support Group for children in the Brazos Valley. K-Place is aimed for children of all ages (through high school seniors) as a fun and safe environment for them to talk (or not talk) with other children who might be working through similar emotions relating to loss, grief, and confusion. I cannot even begin to imagine working through all of those emotions as a young child. I am so proud that our community has this type of program in existence, because kids and parents alike need a safe outlet to learn that it is okay and fully necessary to grieve losses.
The program is open to ALL members of the community and is a free service, led by trained volunteers. It is not a counseling service, but rather a place for the children to have opportunity to be heard. To connect. To see that it is okay to feel. And that sometimes the best thing you can do is talk—about whatever is on your mind. The volunteers are simply there to facilitate group dialogue, to give an opportunity for the children to say what is on their mind, without any pressure or expectations.
The group currently meets once a month, on the last Tuesday of month at 7:00pm at the First Presbyterian Church in Bryan. All you have to do is show up with your kiddos! The groups are broken down into age appropriate groups, and there are even volunteers to play with the little ones (0-4), so that the adults have an opportunity to talk as well.
The group will meet THIS Thursday, October 28th at 7:00pmat First Presbyterian in Bryan. Meredith and I will be there, and we’d love to see new faces :)
If you would like more information about K-Place, or know a family that could benefit from this group, please do not hesitate to contact my sister, Meredith Fleming, or I so we can get you connected accordingly.
