It is such a humbling and precious moment when the Lord speaks
to you through the voice of one His children. I spend so much time seeking
wisdom through the books of accredited authors or podcasts from acclaimed
pastors, but recently I was reminded that God can use anyone to fulfill His
plans and deliver His guidance.
There is a little girl in my Sunday school group that is not only a sweetheart,
but is also very helpful, polite, and intelligent. She is super mature and
sometimes I forget that she is only in first grade. It is clear that the apple
doesn't fall far from the tree--her parents are pretty amazing.
In between the services, I sat down with my little buddy while we waited for
her parents to pick her up after they finished serving. We chatted about
school, family and friends. New kids began arriving for the next service,
but we kept talking about facts about Texas and about fiction vs.
non-fiction books. Then, as another little girl approached the room she
pointed her out as her friend. "She just went to AFRICA!" she proudly announced,
with a big grin. She began telling me a story that her friend had relayed to her
about the trip, and was filled with both excitement and awe. Knowing this girl's
family, I knew that her parents have been to Africa before themselves and I am
sure she has heard their stories many times, but she seemed so amazed that
someone she knew that was her age made the journey. By this point I realized that the
conversation I was engaged in was much deeper than I'd had with someone so
young before. She was not only engaged in the conversation, but inquisitive
and seemed equally interested in listening as speaking. It continued as follows:
Her: I really want to go to Africa someday!
Me: Me too! What would you do there?
Her: I would share my food with them, and I would share about Jesus with
them. I would share the Bible. And if I could bring any of my toys, I would
share those too.
Me: What would you share with them about the Bible?
Her: Probably Luke and John.... And I would sing with them too. I would sing
"Jesus loves you, this I know..." What would YOU share with them?
Me: *Pause* I think I would just want them to know how much Jesus loves
us... That He saved me, and that He can save them too.
*She smiled. But then her face turned down and she hung her head
in defeat*
Her: I want to do that....but... I'm too little....
Me: I don't think so. I think Jesus will use you to do BIG things!
*Her eyes lit up and her smile returned*
How often are we the little girl (or boy) who needs reassurance that God is
all-powerful, fully in control, and capable of so much more than we could
ever produce ourselves? I'm so thankful to my sweet, little friend for
reminding me how big my God is. There are so many times that I talk myself
out of things with doubts because I don't believe I'm qualified enough,
gifted enough, or worthy to do something big. But in reality, I am just not
trusting enough that God will work through me to accomplish His will. He
puts desires in our hearts for a reason, and He wants to fulfill them by
showing us how the very gifts and talents He provides us with can be worked
for His glory and ultimately for His Kingdom. I know that this little girl
will truly do big things because of her faith in the Lord. I love these precious
moments!
